As we get older, staying active becomes increasingly important — not necessarily through intense workouts or hours in the gym, but through regular gentle movement that helps us stay mobile, strong and confident in everyday life.
One of the things I often hear from people is that they feel they’re “too stiff”, “not fit enough” or simply unsure where to start when it comes to exercise. The good news is that movement doesn’t need to be high impact to be effective.
In fact, gentle, controlled exercise can make a huge difference to how we feel physically and mentally.
Why Gentle Movement Matters as We Age
As we age, it’s completely natural to notice changes in flexibility, balance, posture and general mobility. Many people also spend more time sitting — whether working, driving, travelling or relaxing at home — which can gradually lead to stiffness and reduced movement.
Regular gentle exercise can help to:
- Improve posture and balance
- Maintain strength and flexibility
- Support joint mobility
- Increase confidence in everyday movement
- Reduce stiffness and tension
- Encourage better body awareness
- Support overall wellbeing
The key is finding an approach to exercise that feels supportive, manageable and enjoyable.
How I Started Teaching Seated Pilates
I originally started teaching Seated Pilates to private clients who had mobility issues and found getting down onto an exercise mat difficult or uncomfortable.
I quickly realised that many people still wanted to exercise and improve their strength and mobility — they simply needed a gentler and more accessible way to do it.
Using a chair for support allows people to move safely and confidently while still benefiting from many of the principles of Pilates, including posture, breathing, core awareness, mobility and controlled movement.
For many people, Seated Pilates can feel far less intimidating than a traditional exercise class and can provide an excellent starting point for improving movement and confidence.
The Benefits of Seated Pilates
Seated Pilates is a gentle form of exercise that uses controlled movements to help improve mobility, posture, flexibility and strength — all while remaining supported by a chair.
This type of gentle exercise can be particularly beneficial for people who:
- Prefer lower-impact exercise
- Feel nervous attending traditional fitness classes
- Are returning to exercise after a break
- Want to improve mobility and movement confidence
- Find floor-based exercise difficult
- Simply enjoy a gentler pace of exercise
The focus is not on pushing the body to extremes, but on moving well, improving awareness and helping the body stay active and functional.
Seated Pilates Classes in Auchterarder
I currently teach a Seated Pilates class exclusively for members of Auchterarder Golf Club. The current block finishes for the summer on 8th June and it has been lovely to see members enjoying the benefits of gentle regular movement in a relaxed and friendly environment.
One of the nicest parts of teaching these classes is seeing how even small amounts of regular movement can help people feel more confident, mobile and energised.
